Because TPTB found their skills and advanced knowledge about pathophysiology acquired during their heydays in the camps incredibly useful they were instead appointed as heads of departments of medicine and physiology at many universities. One "physician" who conducted the deathly freezing and decompression tests later became a leading flight physician at NASA, thanks to Operation Paperclip. Apparently, some crimes do indeed pay very well. The same holds true for Japanese war criminals who conducted even more inhumane experimentation on POWs at the infamous Unit 731. Their work involved testing chemical and biological warfare agents as well as testing surgical procedures on their unlucky prisoners. They were especially fond of doing vivisections without anesthesia. After the war some low level "researchers" were tried and hanged by the allies but the head of Unit 731 went on to become the owner of one of Japan's biggest pharmaceutical companies.
