Pilots, when flying in IMC, experience something called "The Leans". Without autopilot assist and/or a high rate of instrument scanning and cross-checking, you inevitably end up in a "death spiral". It's real. This "scanning" would NOT be possible if your eyes were unable to focus or remain locked and giving you accurate input. Very thought-provoking!
