It is of the utmost importance that a person be discriminating about who he accepts as a guru. No doubt there are many, many bad gurus out there that are playing at this game and taking advantage of their disciples, usually either financially or sexually. To paraphrase Rumi, the existence of the false indicates that the genuine is also existent. A genuine guru will never take advantage of a disciple but only offer service of spiritual guidance and you not take intoxicants of any kind or teach their disciples to do so. Instead, the history of their lives will show that they have dedicated years and years of their lives too serious meditation to the exclusion of everything other pursuits. I was fortunate enough in my search to come across the writings of Master Kirpal Singh and later be initiated by his spiritual successor Ajaib Singh, who are in the line of the Sikh gurus coming through Tulsi Sahib, Swami ji Maharaj, Baba Jaimal Singh, and Baba Sawan Singh, none of whom achieved their spiritual states through intoxicants and through their writings can be noted to be rational and sane, and certainly none of them committed suicide. The successor of Ajaib Singh is named Sant Sadhu Ram for anyone who may be interested. I'm not aware of Krishnamurti's history of his experiences with gurus, but just because his was bad doesn't mean the genuine thing isn't out there.
