The Khazars were a Turkish tribe. Many Jews in Persia converts originally called Juddin. The earlier kingdom of Adiabene in this same area had become Jewish. It was the descendants of all of these converts who later went north to Khazaria. So some of the original Jews of Khazaria were original Juddin of Persia. Eventually Khazaria became known, to Russians at least, not as the land of the Khazars but as the land of the Jews—Zemlya Zhidovskaya. Much has been written and said about the conversion of the Khazars to Judaism. However, it has been decades since there was a systematic examination of the event's historical evidence. Shaul Stampfer analyzed material from various fields, but found no reliable source for the claim that the Khazars converted to Judaism. Most of the reports we have on the Khazar conversion come from works of descriptive geographical literature written by Iraqi and Iranian scholars who are generally classified as belonging to one of two schools—one often identified as the Jayhani tradition, after the author of a no-longer extant geography that was heavily cited by the scholars of this school, and the other known as the al-Balkhi school, after its founder, which had a strong Iranian element and saw Mecca as its center. The works of these writers combined novel contributions with large parts of the works of their predecessors.
