On a personal level I wear a mask and I can see good reason for that under certain circumstances. On a government level forcing people to wear a mask all the time is nothing more than Herrmann Gessler's hat (that is a story from Schiller's Willhelm Tell: There was a hat on stick and who ever passed by, had to great it for no other purpose than showing obediency to Count Gessler). And that is what it is primarily. One word regarding gas exchange: What a mask does is increasing dead space ventilation. There is an amount of air, that we breathe that stays in the airways, even after complete exhalation. And this air is what you breathe in first. Everyone, always. So if you would do the same measurement as in the video without the mask, but in your trachea, you would get the same low amount of oxygen during exhalation. The only difference the mask makes is it adds the amount of air, that is between the mask and your face to this dead space (perhaps 50ccs? I have not measured it. However big this ammount is, it is rapidly diluted with ambient fresh air during inhalation). For most people an increase in dead space ventilation is not a problem. Even slightly lower amounts of oxygen in inspired air are not necessarily a problem, as hemoglobin works well with lower partial pressures of oxygen. That is if you are healthy, as most of us are!
