They are not wrong. They just serve particular purposes. Some prioritise distances at sea - because that is what mattered most when maps became a thing. Others, like the Peters map are about a realistic depiction of size of countries and continents etc etc... A bit like videos. Some want to inform, others want to confim people's existing warped notions.
