Thanks for reminding us about Bonhoeffer. It is a while since I read about him. He is more relevant today than ever. His message is much clearer than many philosophers who use more complex explanations and give no solutions.He saw this before social media arrived which I think more than anything has brought on stupidity. The important point he makes is the lack of responsibility and this has declined as socialism has slowly spread like a pernicious weed through western civilisation.

I don't think people allow their selves to be stupid they simply don't think they are. You can't teach someone something they think they already know. You can't know everything about everything so alot of it has to do with what you are interested in knowing; values. Children are born with a natural curiosity that can lead to much understanding but is, more often than not, stifled by a forced and poor education. There's so much more to it, worthy of converse, than simply accepting the idea that people allow their selves to be stupid. I am, however, convinced beyond a shadow of doubt that the preponderance of human problems are due to ignorance.

Bonhoeffer‘s Theory of Stupidity is spot on, and it should be called a Theorem now that we are seeing it on grand display all around us.

This is called the 'spirit of slumber' in the Bible. I think maybe it's time to reassess the notion that we "leave" anything for our children as far as the state of the world is concerned, anyway. The world is as it must be our efforts to change it notwithstanding. Because, folks, we are NOT in control of this world. Duh. Talk about stupid. And people still had children even during the Black Plague. Of course, doctors of honor did not perform the modern day purge of responsibility known as abortion in those days.
