A conjecture is a formalized recognition of an obvious pattern that has not been verified or falsified. A hypothesis is a formalized and exact statement or rule that requires exacting tests that can be verified or falsified. A theory is a hypothesis that has been repeatedly and exhaustively tested, and is unassailable with current understanding. Think: the theory of special or general relativity. Or cell theory. Or germ theory. String theory is a misnomer, as is critical race theory. Often specific words are chosen to embellish the legitimacy/prestige/palatability of these concepts, deliberately by their authors or acolytes. Point out the misapplication or misappropriation whenever possible.
