I remember Mad Magazine having a running character that held up a sign saying the end is near, or something like that, with the running gag being that the end never came. Clearly, all of these characters predicting the Arctic being ice free are to be equated with the character from Mad Magazine and not be taken seriously.

It's been about money and control, ultimately, POWER. Gore had his money bet on a Carbon Exchange based in that friendly city, Chicago. Getting in on the ground floor would have made him richer, and more powerful, than Musk is now. But the scheme was too transparent and despite an Academy award for a seriously flawed documentary and his (ig)nobel prize, it failed to successfully launch. Money and control, the same factors that many scientists seek in order to feed their ego and rub shoulders with the political elite that encourages and feeds their lies.
