Daniel 8 1. In the third year of King Beltshazzar, I, Daniel. saw a vision, after the first vision that I saw. 2. I saw in my dream that I was in Susa,* the town that was inherited by Elam, and I saw in my dream that I stood by the Stream of Awli. 3. And I raised my eyes and I saw, behold, a ram stood before the stream, and it has horns and its horns are tall, but one is higher than her companion and that higher one grew out later. 4. I saw the ram butt with its horns toward the west, the north and the south, and none of the creatures could stand before him, and none escaped his hands; he did as he pleased and alighted. 5. And I was present when the breeder* of the Goats came from the West over the face of the whole earth, but he did not land on earth, and the breeder had a horn between his eyes that became visible. 6. He came and reached up to the ram that had the horns, [the ram] that I saw at the stream, and [the breeder] suddenly ran toward him. 7. He reached the ram and murmured at him, and he struck the ram and broke both the horns, and the ram had no power to stand before him, and he threw [the ram] and trampled it, and the ram could not be delivered from the hands of the goat breeder. 8. And the breeder of the goats grew well, and as he matured, his big horn broke, and four others became visible from below it, and [it rose] up to the four spirits of heaven. 9. And from one of them there emerged a small horn that extended greatly toward the south and east. 10. And it grew up to the power of the sky,* but it crashed to the ground, together with the powers and the stars, and it trampled upon them. 11. It reached the chiefs of the armies,* and their self-assurance departed from them and their quarreling dispossessed them of their blessings. 12. And power was given to self-assurance through the serpents,* and sainthood was cast down to the earth, which would be passed over and rectified.* 13. And I heard a holy one* speaking. and another holy one said to that certain one who spoke, "Until when the vision of self-assurance, abomination and desolation come to an end, and until when will the sanctity and the power be trampled?" 14. And he was told, "Until the evening of the morning, two thousand and three hundred, when holiness* shall be victorious. 15. And as I, Daniel, saw the vision, I wished to understand, and, behold, there stood before me as though the image of a man. 16. And I heard the voice of a human being from the middle of Awli; he called out and said, "Gabriel, explain this vision here." 17. And he came to me where I stood,* and as I was afraid and fell on my face,* he said to me, "Understand, O, human being, because this vision is regarding the end times."* 18. And as he spoke to me, I crawled on my face on the ground, but he approached and raised me to my feet.* 19. And he said to me, "Behold, I will show you what will happen at the end of the wrath in the Last Days.* 20. "The ram that you saw with the horns is the king of the Medes and the Persians. 21. "And the breeder of the goats is the king of the Greeks,* and the great horn that he has between his eyes is the first king. 22. "And that he was broken and from under whom there emerged the four kings, that is the four kings who shall rise from the people, but not under their own power. 23. "And at the end* of their kingdom, when the serpents' [rule comes] to an end, there shall rise a king who is cunning* and who understands dominion. 24. "And he assumed his power; yet it was not by his own power. Wonders would be destroyed and rebuilt. He would by-pass and destroy the mighty and the holy. 25. "And in his dominion, treachery was wrought by his hands; however, his heart alighted and he quietly destroyed many; he rose against the authority of the governors, and whatever his hand touched he broke. 26. "And this vision of the morning and of the evening that was revealed is true, and you, Daniel, hide this vision because it pertains to the distant future."* 27. And I, Daniel, was shaken and delusional for Days; nevertheless, I arose and took charge of the king's projects. I marveled at the vision that I had, but nothing happened.* *8:2 Lit.
