Colorado also has a dry climate. Many of the fires came from unattended camp fires, and some were unintentionally "intentional", kids fooling around with the phenomenon of fire which can be more difficult to control than they'd imagined. I remember Smoky the Bear and his warnings, so obviously careless smokers, campers, and kids have long been a problem. Dry lightning and even lightning in a brief thundershower can cause a fire if the rain falls as "virga" over a dry landscape. Are things dryer now than ever? Nope. Read the opening chapters of "Cadillac Desert" to get a sense of what the early explorers thought of the west's options for settlement. Dim to zero.
