Carl Sagan's reputation was severely dented when he used the theory on which global warming is based to predict a 'nuclear winter' arising from the burning of oil wells in the First Gulf War. However, he inspired a generation of scientists and did much to popularise science amongst the general public, so we should cut the great man some slack.
