I talked to a person once who is actually very knowledgeable about the subject, and he stated that burning plastic can be done very cleanly and is actually the best solution for dealing with it rather than putting it in a landfill. We know from coal-fired power plants that the technology certainly exists to install scrubbers on the smokestacks to remove all but the innocuous CO2 from the emissions, although it is likely highly questionable that they do this in China where the mother states her child is getting sick from the emissions.
