In a concentration camp a man dressed in a black uniform with a Freddy Mercury moustache brandishing a metal cane with an eagle on its end stood on wooden dais before the vast crowd of prisoners held in the yard of the Reintroduction to Society Camp. With a very large smile he said, “Today I have some good news and some bad news!” in thick German accent. “What would you like to hear first?” There was silence and he smiled like a child and giggled. “Today is vaccination day!” Again deathly silence as all prisoners looked at their feet. One man groaned and fell where he was. The others around him attempted to kneel and comfort him but a quick stern glance from nearby guards discouraged their actions and they stood again staring at their feet while the man weakly writhed on the muddy surface nearby. Both men and women were dressed in grey prison clothing with arrows on the sleeves and slacks. Their faces were gaunt and grubby. Some of the older inmates were being held up by those around them and their helpers would more than likely be punished soon after the speech. “Now the bad news…” The Freddy Mercury impersonator said. “The injection is 7.5% effective...” he almost looked defeated but all knew it was all a facade. “Anyone refusing the vaccine will have the pleasure of 22 more days in paradise!” He motioned around him to the imaginary delights of his twisted resort. “Perhaps then you might be allowed reintroduction. Although we encourage for you own health that you comply.” Then he pointed to far of guard tower and gave a thumbs up as the national anthem began to play. More inmates began to drop as the temperature and humidly climbed. The anthem played for a total of 22 minutes to the second. As the crowd shuffled off to their assigned tasks the several dozen unmoving bodies lay sprawled and unmoving in the mud that was quickly encrusting around them. Once the yard was cleared of inmates the earth movers began to pick up the fallen and load them in to the bed of a small dump truck. Some groaned as bones cracked with awkward falls. It would be the least of their suffering as they next destination would be mass grave located several kilometres outside the remote facility where they would be buried alive assuming they made the journey. Every day yellow buses laden with more unfortunates came thorough the large heavily chained metal gates that lay behind the wooden platform where Freddy gave his speeches. They were met with sweaty black uniformed men all brandishing impressive moustaches. It seemed this was some kind of prerequisite of carrying out their grisly new found careers. Men and woman of all ages’ legs and hands chained stepped down with horror plastered on their faces as they took in their new home. Women began to weep and some of the older prisoners fell to their knees begging for freedom. They were met with snickers from the guards who poked them with their muddy boots. One older lady wept, “What have I done wrong officer? I have done nothing to deserve this. I paid my taxes, worked hard all of my life, brought up my children to be good people and now I find myself here!” The guard squatted beside her and whispered in her ear, “Don’t worry ma’am all you have to do is take the needle and all will well for you…” She recoiled from his words having seen many of her friends die days after their jab. She was nurse and shouted in his face. “It killed them man, don’t you get that? It murdered them!” The guard gently placed his boot on her chest and pushed her on to her back standing over her maintaining just enough force to keep her there. She sobbed uncontrollably which made the guard smile again like predator waiting for the kill and then he abruptly turned away barking orders to all the new comers to listen up! He told them to follow him to their new resort style accommodation. Some of the younger men tried to resist but the butt of a riffle quickly subdued them and others around them were ordered to assist their passage. Soon they would be taught the manners of the new society and would be given the opportunity to comply. Many would believing that if they only obeyed they could return to their homes and family, perhaps their jobs and their old lives. They had resisted for so long, endured hunger, persecution, hidden in forests, old abandoned buildings, living like fugitives for countless months. They were exhausted and perhaps the rumours were true. The injection could be survived now that it had improved. In the early days many didn’t have any reactions at all. However it was soon apparent that a large percentage of the initial shots were placebos or other vaccines entirely. That would not matter now. They would soon learn the number 7.5 and know exactly what it meant.
