Much food in the world gets discarded or is lost due to spoilage, mainly because it can't be transported from where it is produced to where it is needed in a timely manner. We have a transportation problem, not a food shortage problem.

I don't have a problem with this type of food being produced, as long as it's not all that's on offer, i.e. not compulsory. Both my wife and I have a problem with a lot of newer style foods and drinks on offer, such as Quorn in veg food and sweeteners in drinks, which actually cause stomach upsets. (Non-sugar-free squash is very hard to find these days.) If these products become the only avenue, then some people are going to have a big problem. But, hey, what does the socialist left care.
