I suspect we will see some decline, especially in the west, but it is nothing new. The human race does not like risk and has created the idea that it can control everything or must have somebody to blame. It amounts to a failure to understand that evidence is required for rational decision making. Instead of evidence, we created gods to blame when things did not work out; we made human sacrifices to appease them. We had priests fiddling about in animal intestines to predict the future. In medieval times we believed in witches who were cooking the weather and we burnt them to solve the problem. There is no record of the weather improving as a result. In Victorian time seances were all the range to contact the dead and still we have clairvoyants. This is all evidence of our continual stupidy. We have now reached a new level of educated imbecility. We have more knowledge than at any other time in our history and rather than use it to gain understanding we adapt it to agree with our ridiculous belief that we can control everything. As a result we now have advanced from fiddling about with entrails and replaced it with meaningless mathematical models, which have been coded to prove that we can control the climate. The same as be done with modelling to prove that we can control a virus.
